Depiction of nonprofits and grassroots organizations working on the 17 UN SDGs
Hey everyone!
Thank you to everyone for remaining involved and engaged with the Project 17 global community.
In this newsletter, we’ll be discussing how grassroots organizations and other small nonprofits matter within sustainable action. Let’s take a look at a few notable organizations that have made a difference recently.
Within Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, India Youth Fund has made a huge impact.
Highlights:
The nonprofit, which works with kids aged 11-17 growing up in India's slums, brings life skills to future generations, enabling them to break the poverty cycle.
The nonprofit started in 2012 and has already spread to 5 major cities.
Key programs include education through after-school arts, sports, job education, photography, fitness, beauty and robotics.
27,592 kids have been reached!
Within Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Syrian Community Network is incredibly relevant given current events (President Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorship has ended).
Highlights:
The nonprofit helps acclimate Syrian refugees to life in the United States.
Their work includes protecting these populations from misinformation, politicization, racism, and xenophobia.
This nonprofit works directly with the refugees, rather than just raising money for them.
Within Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, Nontraditional Employment for Women has stepped up to represent women’s rights within the workforce.
Highlights:
The nonprofit works with women from underserved communities, which includes transgender and nonbinary individuals.
The 40-year-old nonprofit is based in New York City and focuses on construction.
They've raised women’s representation in trade careers from 2% to 7%!
Apprenticeship programs are now around 15% women.
For information on other grassroots organizations, check out https://www.givelively.org/! They have done a year-long series examining nonprofit progress for each SDG.
Ultimately, the takeaway is that every action matters. No matter how small your solution is, over time, that solution holds weight. Small nonprofits can create systemic change alongside larger stakeholders.
A question for our readers: how can you make a small solution larger in your community?
Thank you for keeping up-to-date with us, and stay tuned for our first discussion of the new year in January!
